Why We Price Match, Use Coupons & Ebates

Do you have family, friends or a partner who doesn't understand why you price match, use coupons and ebates?  Have you had that miserable cashier in the store or annoyed person in the checkout giving you a hard time for doing it?

You'd think telling someone you saved $100 would make them understand. A lot of the time it does and they are impressed. For those other times however try explaining it like this.

When you look at your savings in terms of hours worked and pay/hr it seems to make even more sense to people. The majority of people can relate to hours worked.

Example: A typical work week of 40hrs @ $15/hr = $600/wk before taxes.

If the full retail value (no coupons, price matching or ebates) is $239.25 I'd need to work 15.95 hrs in order to pay the bill. Total left from pay check for other things would be $360.75.

If all I did was price match and the value was reduced to $145.60 I'd need to work 9.71hrs. Total left over for other things would be $454.40.

Buy doing price matching, using coupons and ebates my final total was reduced down to $108.27 - I'd only have to work 7.22hrs and would have $491.73 left over for other things.

When looking at it from that perspective the only real question is:

How many hours of your work week do you want to spend on groceries?
